Quick Update, I am in the process of compiling a 'how-to' or more accurately 'a how I did it'...
A couple things to note, I have once again reloaded my laptop and I think finally have it in a working/final state. So for this most recent 'release' if you will I decided to for-go installing Automatix and install everything myself. I have a ton of websites bookmarked that I will hopefully put into a synchronized list on how to install Ubuntu.

Out of the Box
So I finally have my brand new Nikon D40 DSLR and it is AMAZING! Here is a view from my apartment of downtown Chicago:
I have not even come close to figuring this thing out yet, but I think the limits are endless, if this photo provides any glimpse of what's to come.
In case you're wondering, we found a great deal on this camera, 18-55 & 55-200VR lenses on Amazon.com. I think the total price with shipping was around $589, I'll verify and correct this info later.
